Nonsurgical Procedures
Surgery to improve the appearance of your face or body is not your only option. Cosmetic enhancements include a variety of nonsurgical options, too.
Gregory Mackay, MD, is well-versed in many popular nonsurgical cosmetic enhancements, including three of our most popular procedures: fat-transfer injections, laser treatments, and chemical peels.
Fat-Transfer Injections
A type of fat grafting procedure, these injections do just what it sounds like: transfer fat from one area of the body (e.g., outer thighs) into target areas to add volume or fill in irregularities. Common target areas for fat-transfer injections include:
- Breasts – for augmentation purposes or to fill in depressions left from a previous surgery
- Buttocks – to enhance the shape or size of the buttocks
- Face – to restore cheek volume
In other words, fat-transfer injections are methods of sculpting your body using your own body tissue. The procedure involves three basic steps: suctioning fat from one area of the body, in a process similar to liposuction; processing of the fat; and injecting the fat into a target area. There will be some fat loss in the target area after the procedure, with final results setting in at about 6 months.
Both patients pictured above had fat injection to their lower eyelids in conjunction with another surgical procedure. Fat transfer is a very versatile procedure and has many benefits. Whether it's restoring a youthful appearance to your face, or giving your breasts more volume, it has become an increasingly popular procedure. Many people prefer the use of their own fat versus foreign materials being put in their body.
Laser Treatments
You may be surprised at how dramatically you can improve the look of your skin with laser treatment. Dr. Mackay has successfully treated patients with wrinkles, scars, birthmarks, and sun-damaged skin. It is most often used on the face but can also be applied to other areas of the body, such as the neck, chest, arms, and legs.
During this procedure, we use a CO2 laser, which uses carbon dioxide to remove the uppermost layer of skin without damaging surrounding tissue. It simultaneously heats the underlying skin, stimulating new collagen growth. Your skin after laser treatment will be clearer, smoother, and firmer.
The patient pictured above is photographed (left) before her CO2 Laser. She had skin damage and many signs of aging. Only 10 days following her laser procedure she is photographed (right) with minimal redness. As you can see, the deep lines and wrinkles have significantly improved. The texture of her skin is smooth and appears much younger. Once the redness subsided she was left with beautiful, glowing skin.
Chemical Peels
One of the simplest methods to refresh the skin of your face is with a chemical peel. It can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as smooth uneven or textured skin.
During a chemical peel, a special liquid solution is applied to the surface of your skin. It does not hurt, although it may cause a tingling sensation. The strength of the solution will be determined based on the current condition of your skin, as well as your skin care goals. The first few days after a chemical peel, your skin may appear to be dry and flake or peel off. Once the outer, damaged layer of skin is removed, you are left with young, healthy, and vibrant skin that practically glows.
