Tissue Expander to Implant Reconstruction
This patient tested positive for the Breast Cancer gene. She decided to undergo a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy and reconstruction. Following the mastectomy, Dr. Mackay placed tissue expanders. Four months later the tissue expanders were exchanged for breast implants. This is a common form of breast reconstruction.
Following a lumpectomy and radiation, this patient later decided to have a bilateral mastectomy due to genetic testing. The breast surgeon was able to spare her nipples, and Dr. Mackay placed tissue expanders immediately following. Six months later the tissue expanders were exchanged for implants. During the secondary breast reconstruction Alloderm, a dermal matrix, was placed to help support the breast implants. Oftentimes after a mastectomy and radiation, the breast tissue can be very thin and additional support is necessary. Dr. Mackay also performed fat grafting to correct any additional deformities.
The patient above underwent a double mastectomy with bilateral DIEP flap reconstruction. A DIEP flap is an advanced form of breast reconstruction that involves a microsurgical technique. The DIEP flap uses excess abdominal tissue and fat to reconstruct breasts. Not everyone is an ideal candidate for this form of reconstruction. However, a DIEP Flap can give amazing results to a patient’s breasts and abdomen as an added bonus. He performs these procedures in conjunction with his microsurgical-trained partner, Dr. Eugenia Page.
Latissimus Flap Reconstruction
The patient pictured above had breast reconstruction using the Latissimus flap technique. Immediately following her mastectomy, Dr. Mackay used her Latissimus Dorsi Muscle to create a flap in order to reconstruct her breasts. Tissue expanders were also placed at this time and then exchanged approximately three months later for implants. Depending on each patient, breast reconstruction can involve the use of multiple techniques to ensure the safest and most aesthetic result.
Pictured above is one of Dr. Mackay’s long-time breast reconstruction patients. Although many of Dr. Mackay’s patients are given a difficult diagnosis, he thoroughly enjoys caring for them and being a part of their journey. Dr. Mackay’s goal is always to make them feel as beautiful on the outside as they are strong on the inside.
